Global Search
Global search is the search box in the app bar at the top of every page. It searches across pages, inventory, devices, locations, configuration, and help articles at the same time, so you can jump straight to what you need instead of navigating through menus. In an RFID deployment where a single site can hold thousands of tagged assets, dozens of readers, and a deep location hierarchy, being able to paste a tag ID or type a partial name and land on the right record saves real time.
Opening Search
- Click the search icon in the app bar to expand the search box.
- Press / anywhere in the app to jump straight into the search box. This shortcut is ignored while you are typing in a field or while a dialog is open, so it never steals keystrokes from a form.
- Type at least 2 characters to see results. Search updates automatically after a brief typing pause and shows up to 10 matches at a time, with the closest match to your query listed first.
What You Can Find
Global search covers every major entity in Tagnet, plus the application's own navigation and documentation.
Inventory & Catalog
- Inventory Items: Matches on instance ID, item ID, description, and the active RFID tag ID. Paste a tag ID from a scan report or a handheld read and land directly on the item it belongs to.
- Items: The product and asset catalog. Matches on Item ID, description, and item type name.
- Custom Fields: Field definitions by name.
- Sequence Generators: By name.
Custom field values are also searchable when the field itself has Global Search enabled. See When to Enable Global Search in the Custom Fields guide for when that makes sense, for example a Purchase Order or serial number field.
Locations & Devices
- Locations: By name, code, type, or description.
- Devices: Reader devices match on name, IP address, description, and external identifier. Mobile, Yard, and VMI devices match on name, description, and external identifier.
- Device Groups: By name or description.
Raw Tag Reads
Type 4 or more hex characters of a tag ID (a full or partial EPC) to find raw tag reads by that tag, whether or not it's mapped to an inventory item. This is a different match than the Inventory Items result above: that one finds an item by its currently mapped tag, while this one finds the tag itself in the raw ingest stream, which is what makes it the tool for unmapped tags. Results show one row per matching tag: whether it's mapped, how many times it's been read, and when and by which device it was last seen. Selecting a result opens the Ingest History filtered to that tag.
Configuration
- Item Types, Location Types, Device Types, Transaction Types: The four classification systems described in Types (each managed on a tab of the Items, Locations, or Devices page), matched by name and description.
Automation
- Workflows: By name, description, or the names and configuration of their actions.
- Movement Rules: By name or description.
Application Pages
Every page you have access to, including administrative pages like Users, Roles, API Keys, and System Settings. Page results respect your permissions the same way the navigation menu does, so you never see a page result you couldn't otherwise reach.
Documentation
Help articles, including this one, are indexed alongside everything else. Selecting a documentation result opens the article in the help drawer rather than navigating away from your current page.
What Happens When You Select a Result
Most entity results take you straight to that record's detail page. A few device types don't have a dedicated detail page yet and open a details dialog instead.
| Result type | Selecting it |
|---|---|
| Application page | Navigates to that page |
| Inventory Item, Item, Location, Custom Field, Sequence Generator | Opens the detail page |
| Item Type, Location Type, Device Type, Transaction Type | Opens the detail page |
| Reader device, Device Group, Workflow, Movement Rule | Opens the detail page |
| Mobile, Yard, or VMI device | Navigates to the Devices page and opens the details dialog there |
| Raw Tag Read | Opens the Ingest History, filtered to that tag |
| Documentation | Opens the article in the help drawer |
Note: Mobile, Yard, and VMI devices don't have detail pages yet, so their search results open a dialog on the Devices page. Everything else with a detail page navigates you there directly.
Search Respects Your Access
Global search never shows you a result you couldn't otherwise see. Entity results are filtered by your access scope assignments the same way list pages are, and if you've narrowed the Scope Filter to specific sites, search results are narrowed the same way. Page results are gated by the same permissions and roles that control whether an item appears in the navigation menu.
Search Tips
- Paste a tag ID to trace an item: If you have a tag ID from a scan event, device event log, or a handheld read, paste it into search to jump directly to the inventory item wearing that tag.
- Check an unmapped tag before mapping it: If a tag isn't mapped to anything, the Inventory Items result won't find it, but the Raw Tag Reads result will, since it searches the ingest stream directly. Paste the tag ID, confirm it's actually been scanned (and by which device), then copy it from the Ingest History to map it to an item.
- Search by instance ID or SKU: Typing an exact instance ID or item ID surfaces that record first.
- Use it to navigate, not just to find data: Typing a feature name like "sequence" or "connection profiles" is often faster than opening the navigation menu, especially on administrative pages you visit less often.
- Look for it in Documentation too: If you're not sure where a setting lives, search for a plain-language term. Matching help articles show up next to the pages and records they describe.
