Permission Changes Not Visible to User

Symptom: An administrator has changed a user's role or access-scope assignments, but the user reports that their menus, available pages, or visible data have not updated.

What to Expect

Role and access-scope changes do not require the affected user to log out and back in. Changes propagate to the user's active session automatically:

  • On navigation: the change is applied the next time the user navigates to any page within the app.
  • Within about two minutes: if the user is idle on the same page, the session refreshes in the background and picks up the new permissions within roughly two minutes.
  • Immediately on a page refresh: pressing F5 or using the browser reload button forces the session to refresh right away.

Disabling a user account is immediate: the session is terminated on the user's next request and they cannot continue using the app.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Ask the user to navigate to another page

The simplest fix. The user clicks any navigation item, and the new role or scope assignment applies on arrival at the next page. They do not need to log out.

2. Ask the user to reload the page

If the user does not want to leave their current page, a browser reload (F5 or the refresh icon) applies the change immediately.

3. Wait up to two minutes

If the user is working on a long-running task and cannot navigate away, the session refreshes automatically in the background. The change will appear within about two minutes without any action from the user.

4. Confirm the change was saved

Before contacting the user, verify that the change was actually saved:

  1. Navigate to the Users page.
  2. Open the affected user's Edit dialog.
  3. Confirm the correct role and scope assignments are shown.

If the edit dialog still shows the old values, the change was not saved; make the change again and click Save.

5. Check if the user's account is still active

If a user's account was disabled, their session is terminated immediately and they cannot log in. If access was removed intentionally, this is the expected behavior.

Navigate to the Users page and check the user's status chip. If they are Inactive and access should be restored, use the Activate action in the row actions menu.

Still Not Working?

If the user has navigated, reloaded, and waited more than a few minutes and the correct permissions are still not visible, check the Security Events log for recent events related to that user. Look for UserRoleAssigned, UserRoleRemoved, UserAccessScopeAssigned, or UserAccessScopeRemoved events to confirm when the change was recorded and that it matches what you intended.
